Background:

Vermont has a rich history, in turn, it’s a state rich in hauntings. The “Black Agnes” a statue that lives in Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier, Vermont. The statue was crafted by Karl Bitter, it took inspiration from Augustus Saint Gaudens statue named “Grief.” This statue was created in order to watch over John Hubbard’s final resting place.
John Hubbard was a wealthy business man who resided in Montpelier, Vermont in the 1800’s. He inherited an abundant amount of wealth from his Aunt, Fanny Kellog who was well off. But despite his materialistic fortunes, John Hubbard died at the age of 53 as the wealthiest man in Montpelier. Over the years John was alive, the citizens of Montpelier festered envy towards his wealth, and in his passing the citizens distributed his wealth amongst the city of Montpelier.

The Three Daring Teens

Black Agnes made its fame by the infamous legend of the three teens who dared to sit on Blag Agnes’ lap. One eerie night they snuck into the cemetery in the middle of the night and each of them took turns sitting on the statue's lap mockingly However, just at the next sunrise, nothing had happened to them, they felt they had escaped the rumored paranormal activities. However, a series of unfortunate events followed the three of them; one of them got into an accident and was hit by a car, one fell down a flight of stairs and broke their leg soon after and the last one drowned tragically in a canoe accident.

What does it symbolize?

Black Agnes is supposed to symbolize “Thoughts on Death.” It is supposed to symbolize Thantos, the personification of death from Greek Mythology.

A “Borrowed” Legend or Revenge?

The legend has carried over to Vermont all the way from Maryland. The story of the statue being cursed was borrowed from “Black Aggie.” But others rumor the reason the statue is cursed is due to John Hubbard’s will chasing after those who disrespect him in the afterlife, just as they did in his mortality.
