A Castle with Bloody History
History
Leap Castle, located in County Offaly, Ireland, is a medieval tower-house built by the O'Bannon clan, who were subordinate to the powerful O'Carrolls of Ely. Its original Irish name, Léim Uí Bhánáin, means "Leap of the O'Bannons." The castle guarded a strategic pass through the Slieve Bloom Mountains toward Munster. Sources commonly date its construction to the mid-13th century, though that date is not fully confirmed.
It’s rumored that it was named after two brothers who leaped from a rock to settle a quarrel over the clan's leadership. The O'Carrolls held the castle for a while, centuries. Of course, just like other places I’ve written about, it has a dark, frightful history. Leap Castle has ties to the reported massacre of MacMahon mercenaries, which took place in 1599.
In 1649, the castle was inherited through marriage and was passed onto to the Darby family, who owned it for the next three centuries.
In the early 1900s, that’s when the castle began to get more popular and to get more attention through Mildred Darby's séances and her published accounts of paranormal activity.
Sadly, the castle met a terrible fate. It was burned and badly damaged in 1922 during the Irish Civil War, and the Darbys abandoned it. It stood in ruins until 1991. A musician by the name of Seán Ryan bought the place and began restoring it.
How haunted is it really?
Leap Castle upholds its reputation as one of the most haunted places in Ireland. The most commonly talked about paranormal presence that resides in the castle's best known presence is described as an ancient, malevolent entity that is said to give off a foul, sulfurous smell. Visitors and owners have long reported it, and it is often said to lurk near the castle's chapel and its gruesome oubliette, a dungeon where prisoners were dropped and left to live out their final moments.
Local lore says that the ghosts of the MacMahon mercenaries, massacred at a feast in 1599, are still wandering the grounds. Another is the spirit of a young girl named Emily, said to have died after falling from the battlements. Another spirit that has been talked about is referred to as the "wild captain” who is said to search the grounds for lost treasure.
In recent years, psychics and paranormal investigators have visited and the castle has appeared on ghost hunting programs such as Ghost Adventures and the podcast How Haunted?
All of the spirits I talked about above are stories, reported experiences and folklore. No sources I’ve read over offer concrete, legit evidence of paranormal activity. But who knows, maybe someone will get some solid evidence in the future.
What’s going on with the castle now?
Leap Castle is now privately owned and open to visitors by appointment, and it is often addressed as one of the most haunted castles in the world. Visit it, if you dare.
